M38: Wedding Cake Tree, Cornus controversa variegata

The Table Dogwood, Cornus controversa, comes from Japan, Korea, China and the Himalayas, and was introduced  before 1880. It is a small tree, to 8 m, and is characterised by the arrangement of branches in flat layers. Veitch’s nursery in Exeter  introduced the variegated form in  1880. The white flowers are arranged in flat panicles above the foliage, and the fruit, if formed, are small and black
