B05: Golden Elm: Ulmus x hollandica

This is a golden variety of a hybrid elm. In the 1960’s most Elm trees succumbed to Dutch Elm disease, a fungus originating in Japan and borne by a bark beetle, and by 1990 nearly all Elm trees in Britain, America and Europe had been killed, leaving only the roots and suckers – the plants exists now as a hedgerow species. In Amsterdam some 30,000 mature trees remain protected by anti fungal injections. Some remain in Britain in Edinburgh and Brighton, and resistant varieties have been isolated and bred and are now being planted. This  cultivar is susceptible to Dutch Elm  disease and the tree is rapidly succumbing to disease ( summer 2021).
