This is the largest of the Mahonias commonly grown in Britain. It is a garden hybrid between two Chinese species, M. japonica and  M. lomarifolia. It will grow 5 m high with mostly upright spikes of scented yellow flowers produced around Christmas time and blue berries in summer. Related species occur in North America, hence the common name Oregon Grape. Mahonia is closely related to Berberis. Fl  11-1
