D16: Cockspur Hawthorn: Crataegus crus-gallii

This Hawthorn originates from North America, Quebec to Kansas. It was introduced in 1691. it grows to 6 m. The leaves are glabrous on both sides and it turns deep orange in autumn. It is often confused with two other hawthorns that are much planted, C. x lavallei and C. x prunifolia. Ours has a spectacular array of lichens, but died in 2018. It remains standing.
