Box is a small glossy green evergreen tree, native to the Southern Britain and the Mediterranean region to Turkey It can grow to 9 m. It prefers calcareous soils and is often associated with the Beech tree. The largest population in the UK is Box Hill, Surrey. It’s wood is prized for making musical wind instruments. Since 2018 the caterpillar of the Box tree moth, Cydalima perspectalis, from S E Asia, has been attacking plants but we have been spraying our clipped bushes successfully.
