E14: Tulip Tree: Liriodendron tulipifera

Two species of Liriodendron are planted: L tulipifera originates from Southeastern and mid-western USA (introduced about 1650), and L. chinense from Central China ( 1901). Fast growing trees they can live for 300 years. The flowers, prolific in hot years, are, large, cup shaped, pale green with a central cone of stamens. In good years the autumn colour can be striking.
