D08: Horse Chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum “Baumannii”

This is a double flowered cultivar first identified in Geneva in 1819. It produces no conkers but we are unsure if this is because it is sterile or the double flower prohibits fertilisation. They are all subject to the leaf mining moth, Cameraria ohridella, and we are putting leaf miner traps up to help reduce the infestation. Ours are described as “remarkable” in the national Tree Register.
