H14: Ginkgo: Ginkgo biloba
A living fossil: the only representative of a family that was common in Jurassic times with the dinosaurs, it is not closely related to any other family of trees. It was first described by westerners in Japanese Temple Gardens in 1690, but some trees in Temples in China are over 1500 years old. It is dioecious having male and female trees. It is the official tree of Tokyo. 6 trees survived the nuclear blast at Hiroshima and are still alive.
